Attention: Seniors and Parents! Get a head start on applying for U. S. Government college grants and other financial aid programs! Go to the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Aid) website and apply for a P.I. N. for both the college-bound student and one parent. You can save four weeks of processing time by using this “PIN” to “sign” your on-line FAFSA (submitted after January 1, 2007.) You need to submit a FAFSA whether you are likely to qualify for federal aid or not.) www.pin.ed.gov.
SCHOLARSHIPS
Best Buy Scholarship – Rewards students with good grades who give back to their communities. Deadline for application is February 15, 2007.
Bernard C. Harris Scholarship Program- $1,000 award. Criteria: 3.0 GPA, strong family values, entrepreneurship or community commitment and evidence of academic achievement. CCHS can select one student to compete for this scholarship. For applications, go to www.harrisconnect.com/scholarship. Complete and return to Mrs. Morgan by February 17, 2007.
The Call Me MISTER program is an effort to address the critical shortage of African American male teachers particularly among South Carolina’s lowest performing schools. Program participants are selected from among under-served, socio-economically disadvantaged and educationally at-risk communities. More information is available at www.callmemister.clemson.edu.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Emergency Services Scholarship Fund-Provides undergraduate scholarships to students seeking to meet the minimum educational requirements for employment in emergency services professions. Deadline: April 6.
Elder and Leemaur Publishers Scholarships: Scholarships for students in grades 11 or 12 worth up to $10,000. Four scholarships, all requiring essays, are available. All application information is available at www.elpublishers.com/content/downloads.php. Deadlines vary but next deadline is March 1, 2007.
East Carolina University-Abernathy Scholarship ($2500): This scholarship is for deserving students pursuing a degree in the area of Science Education through the College of Education at East Carolina and who wish to pursue a career as a science educator. At lease a 3.0 high school GPA is required. Deadline: January 31, 2007.
Hispanic Heritage Youth Awards- The application is available online at www.hispanicheritage.org. Students can apply for as many categories as they want in one region, but can only be chosen as an award recipient in one category. All applications and required supporting documents must be postmarked no later than February 2.
Jagannathan Scholarship – Available to students who will attend public NC universities. Must demonstrate academic achievement, leadership and financial need. Award is $3,500 per year. Deadline is February 14, 12007. http://tinyurl.com/ye7p8h.
McDonalds USA National Employee Scholarship Program: Scholarships are awarded to student-employees who excel in their studies, serve their communities, and work hard to deliver outstanding service for our customers. Scholarships range from $5,000 to $10,000. Students must plan to attend an accredited college or technical school after graduation and must have been working for McDonalds for four continuous months at time of application. The 2007 scholarship program opens January 1, 2007 and the application can be completed on-line at www.mcdonalds.com/usa/good/people/scholarship. Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation: Scholarships are available to graduating seniors who are the son/daughter of a living or deceased Marine on the grandchild of a US Marine who served in WWII. One year scholarships (ranging from $500 to $10,000) are awarded annually. Deadline: March 1, 2007.
North Carolina Student Loan Program for Health, Science and Math – Based on academics and financial need to students in these fields. Loans from $3,000-$5,000 per year. Application deadline is June 1, 2007. For more information and service repayment requirements go to www.CFNC.org/HSM.
NC Society of Accountants Scholarship Awards: Student must be a NC resident, plan to work in the accounting field, and enroll in an accounting program in college. Deadline: April 15, 2007.
Nurse Scholars Program – competitive merit based scholarship-loan for students who desire to practice nursing in NC. Awards range from $3,000-$5,000 per year. Deadline is February 28, 2007. www.CFNC.org/NSP.
Prospective Teachers Scholarship-Loan – This is a competitive, merit-based scholarship-loan program available to students who have chosen to enter the education professions. The annual award will be $2,500 per year for students enrolled full time. Deadline is February 28, 2007. For more information visit www.CFNC.org/PTSL
Ronald McDonald House Charities National Scholarship Program –RMHC is proud to be able to help students who dream of going to college, but may not have the finances necessary to realize this dream. A transcript, Personal Statement, Letter of Recommendation, and Parent/Guardian IRS form 1040 is required. Deadline: February 15.
“Scholar Athlete Milk mustache of the Year Award Program” ($7,500)-Recognizes outstanding scholar athletes in grade 12. Judging of the nominees will be based on five criteria: academic performance (35%), athletic excellence (35%), leadership (15%), community service (10%) and milk experience (5%). SAMMY 2007 applications will only be accepted online at www.bodybymilk.com until March 9.
