Wachovia Cup

Charlotte Catholic held on to its lead in the Wachovia Cup standings for the N.C. 3A classification after winning the boys' and girls' N.C. swimming titles during the winter sports season.

The Wachovia Cup recognizes high schools that achieve the best overall athletic performances in each of the state's four classifications.

Charlotte Catholic, which has finished runner-up the past two years, has 362.5 points, Asheville has 307.5, three-time reigning champion Asheville Roberson has 242.5 and Lake Norman and Pfafftown Reagan are tied for fourth (215). Other Observer-area schools in the top 15: Mooresville (seventh, 192.5) and Hickory (167.5).

In 1A, Bishop McGuinness leads with 372.5 points to 255 for second-place N.C. School of Science and Math. Albemarle is 13th with 120 points.

In 2A, Raleigh Cardinal Gibbons leads with 440 points and East Lincoln is second with 247.5 points. Salisbury is fifth (227.5); Shelby seventh (197.5), Newton-Conover ninth (167.5), Mount Pleasant 11th (162.5) and Lenoir Hibriten 15th (132.5).

In 4A, Chapel Hill is first with 337.5 points. Myers Park is second with 307.5, four-time reigning champion Providence is fourth (230), North Mecklenburg fifth (227.5), West Charlotte sixth (222.5) and Gastonia Ashbrook 15th (160). -- B.H.
