Recap 2006 Season: The 2006 Girl’s Varsity Volleyball team dominated conference play and advanced to the third round of the state tournament. By advancing to the third round our team finished among the top eight teams in 3A North Carolina volleyball. The team finished the season with a record of 19-8. The Cougars were led by head coach Tim Leary and assistant coach Patti McClure. Coach Leary praised his two seniors, Catherine Opalka and Kate Tobalski, for their contributions on the court and their leadership of a very young and upcoming team. Both served as team co-captains, along with junior Sarah Wilkins. Coach Leary also pointed out that this year’s squad featured five juniors, four sophomores and one freshman, who all improved during the season and will provide the team with enthusiasm and experience in the years ahead. Coach Leary described the team as “one of best I have ever been a part of,” a close group that supported each other. The Cougars achieved an undefeated 2006 conference record while sweeping every match three games to zero. The conference tournament was no exception with wins in the semis and finals in straight games. The team was led by senior Kate Tobalski, who was named Player of the Year in the Queen City 3A/4A conference. Tobalski was also selected varsity conference player of the year as a sophomore and junior, and she made first team all-conference each of her four years at Catholic. Both accomplishments were firsts for the varsity volleyball program. Junior Katy Ferris also received post season honors as 2006 first team all-conference, for the second straight year. The Cougars were led statistically by Ferris’ 89 service aces and 367 assists, Wilkins’ 265 digs, and Tobalski’s 235 kills and 55 blocks. The team voted Kate Tobalski Most Valuable Player and junior Laura Stewart Most Improved Player. The Coaches Award was presented to Sarah Wilkins. Other team members included juniors Rachel Carrier and Stephanie Radding; sophomores Jasmine Frantz, Jessica Keane, Christine Poutier and Lindsay Casper; and freshman Allie Strittmatter. The team, coaches and parents celebrated their great season and lifelong friendships with a dinner and get-together. We are all very proud of the volleyball team and their representation of our school and community. They demonstrated excellent sportsmanship all year round. And the girls want to thank team parent Penny Stewart and everyone who attended their matches, especially the students and athletes who cheered wildly for them in the state tournament – your adrenalin and school spirit were unmatched. You rocked! Preview 2007 Season: News: Charlotte Catholic Graduate Brittany Zahn is named the SoCon Player of the Week! Read more by clicking here.
