Charlotte Catholic's Charlie Hetzel and Keri McAfee won most valuable performer awards to help the Cougars win their third straight boys' and girls' titles at the N.C. 3A swimming championships at N.C. State's Willis Casey Aquatic Center on Saturday.

Hetzel won the 100 butterfly and the 200 individual medley, earning automatic all-American in the 200 individual medley with a time of 1 minute 55.34 seconds, and also swam on the winning 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay.

He teamed with Ham Hollett, Chase Haislip and Collin Thilo on the 200 medley relay (1:38.93) and with Hollett, Thilo and Kit Frederick in the 400 freestyle relay (3:16.90).

McAfee set two N.C. 3A records en route to winning the 100 butterfly (56.39) and 200 individual medley and also swam on the winning 200 medley relay (1:51.96) and 400 freestyle relay (3:38.17).

She teamed with Mary Kate Hetzel, Christen McDonough and Jordan Koletic on the first relay and with Hetzel, Koletic and Erin Gaeckle on the last one.

CHARLOTTE CATHOLIC WINS BOTH MEN’S AND WOMEN’S CROWNS IN NCHSAA 3-A SWIMMING

RALEIGH – Charlotte Catholic swim teams each took their third consecutive North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 3-A swimming and diving championships on Saturday night at the Willis Casey Aquatic Center on the North Carolina State University campus.

Led by Most Valuable Performer Charlie Hetzel, Catholic tallied 305.5 points in the men’s competition over second place Lake Norman with 172. Hetzel won both the 100 butterfly and the 200 individual medley, recording an automatic all-American time in the 200 IM.

Waynesville Tuscola was third with 145, followed by Concord (139.5) and Asheville T.C. Roberson (139).

Keri McAfee of Charlotte Catholic was the women’s MVP, with a pair of new state 3-A records en route to winning the 100 butterfly and the 200 individual medley. Her time in the 200 IM was good for automatic all-American consideration.

Catholic recorded 358.8 points in the women’s competition to 256 for runner-up Pfafftown Ronald Reagan. Marvin Ridge was third at 209, with Tuscola fourth with 166 and T.C. Roberson in fifth at 161.

The 3-A swimming championships are sponsored by the Raleigh Sports Consortium and the Greater Raleigh Convention and Visitors Bureau.

The following CCHS Swimmers are moving on to the next level!  We congratulate them on their success and wish them good luck in the future.  Charlie Hetzel will be swimming for the US Naval Academy, Keri McAfee for the University of North Carolina, and Ham Hollett for the University of South Carolina and Kathryn Turner for Lenoir Rhyne!  WOW!!  These swimmers join class of 2006 alum, Shannon Van Hoy, currently swimming for the Roll Tide!  We are proud of our Cougars!

  Congratulations to Kathryn Turner who signed with Lenoir Rhyne for swimming.

Senior Charlie Hetzel has qualified for the United States Olympic Trials in swimming. Charlie swam a qualifying time in the 100 meter butterfly at the United States Swimming Southern Sectional Championship in Nashville, TN. His time was the 5th fastest high school time in the country this year. The Olympic Trials will be held in Omaha, Nebraska beginning on June 30th. Charlie has committed to the United States Naval Academy.

Sophomore Mary Kate Hetzel has qualified for the United States Swimming 18 and Under National Championships in five events: the 100 backstroke, 200 backstroke, 100 butterfly , 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle. The National Championships will be held at the University of Minnesota in August.
